Celestia, a new super from Rikesville, travels to Metrocity as she is lured by her interest in the Goth-like Razorwing. She becomes entangled in an attempt to capture and eliminate the powers of supers by a group of cybernetic soldiers. Sparks is given a lead on a new bounty - one of the Goth mutants in Metrocity named Sharae. Black Tiger becomes involved, as do many of the heroes from the H.E.R.O. series as war breaks out between the cybernetic mercenaries and the Goths. In the midst of the action, Razorwing unveils the Overlook, his new command center for a group of the H.E.R.O. agents he has found to be group-friendly. H.E.R.O. - Malice is the 12th book of the ongoing H.E.R.O. series.

HERO Malice Kevin Rau Books

I've read every book in this series although I haven't published reviews for all of them. This latest book continued the narrative in Kevin Rau's solid and easy to read style. For lovers of super-hero fiction its definitely a fine example.

Unfortunately, that means that it has some serious flaws that in my mind drag it down to 3 stars.

The first problem is that character development seems to have been almost completely abandoned at this point. Viewpoint characters change constantly so its rare that you get to fully experience a characters thoughts and feelings. Hints are given out, but nothing complete.

This also contributes to the next issue I have which is that the enemies seem to be pulled out of comic-book central casting. They are uber-powerful except for 1-2 hard to discover weaknesses and they can put together elaborate plots and plans in hours. H.E.R.O. - Malice is a wonderful example of that as the bad guys develop part of the plan in less than 2 days despite the extremely high scientific barriers to success they themselves describe. Later they managed to modify a drug that has to be manufactured for a specific DNA signature in minutes and inject someone they captured far after their initial foray into capturing test subjects.

That said, I like most of the characters, even if I feel that Kevin would do far better to choose one character and follow them throughout a book rather than jump from character to character every chapter. This pattern reminds me way too much of a comic book and while it can be fun, it definitely prevents these books from reaching the quality of Wearing The Cape, Confessions of a D-list Supervillain and Velveteen v the Junior Super Patriots.

HERO Malice Kevin Rau Books Reviews

Good sale. But it's friggin' STUPID that I have to write a minimum number of words. Crap. Three more to go.
Fast paced book introducing a new mutant into the hero world. Reading this book was a journey into a world of aliens, mutants, and superheroes where you have a ring side seat of the action.

Can't wait for the next one! I recommend this book and all the others in the series.
I've been very impressed with this authors work from the very first book in the series. A vibrant world with a very plausible reason for super powers. His characters are very human and have relatively normal problems even with great power. I absolutely enjoy this series and can't wait for the next book.
I love these books. I love MOST of the characters. However, I held the 5th star back to encourage the author to put more Spartan in the next book.

For those interested in reading this book, find the first book in the series to read. You MUST read these in order. The series is great, this book is great, I just wish my favorite character had more page space.
Great author and series!
Another in the ongoing HERO series. Like the others it has plusses and minuses. Diva is bordering on stereotype tho, wish we could have a bit more character development and/or 'arcs'. Some of the villians feel a bit 'easy'.
One of the things I enjoy about this series is that things mentioned early on become relevant later. In this instance, I'm referring to Carey, who was part of Stephanie's study group until Stephanie became a super. Then Carey's hatred for supers made her distance herself from the group and we didn't really hear from her - until now, where she plays a central part in the story.
